The Joys of an Autumn Walk

With the long summer days coming to an end and those crisp mornings beginning to make their return, we think it is the perfect time to pause and take note of the seasons.


Many may be tempted to tuck away their hiking boots as temperatures begin to drop, days become shorter, and school routines settle in, yet we believe one of the best walking seasons is just getting started.


Lace up your boots, pair a thick, cosy sweater with your rain jacket, and don’t let this special time of the year pass you by. Let us help you to see why it might just be (arguably) the most wonderful time of the year.



It’s a season marked by an abundance of color. With the days getting shorter, golden hour somehow seems a bit more golden. Appreciate the fading light of golden hour, dipping down onto familiar hills. The trees begin to show off, their leaves turning from greens to pottery reds, rust oranges, and inviting yellows. With these colors popping against a grey or light blue above, it is a great reminder to keep your eyes toward the sky.


Brisk, fresh air awakens the soul. If you’re like us, you’ve likely had a very full summer. Complete with holidays, swimming in the sea, and keeping up with footloose and fancy-free children. To even to the most avid summer lovers, those long hot days can be draining to anyone. High temperatures can sap our energy and productivity, leaving us with little inspiration. Let the cool air breathe life back into your every day. Allow your autumnal walk to awaken your senses. Notice the woodsy scents, the citrusy notes, and the overall freshness of the air.


Happy four-legged companions. Speaking of brisk air, these cooler temperatures are perfect for bringing along your dog on a hill walk. Hot summer temperatures and busy trails can be unsafe for your canine friend, but the change in season opens up pathways that were previously a no-go. Is there anything better than cool weather, warm clothing, and seeing a happy and excited dog bounding around?



Autumn offers a chance to pause. When seasons change, let it be a time to reset. Ever feel a sense of calmness when you wake to a chilly autumn morning with a soft blanket of fog?  Slow your purposeful steps and take notice of how fog tends to soften its surroundings, removing the stark contrasts of the every day. Let this ethereal mood be a chance to blur away the daily distractions and allow yourself time to answer the bigger questions of life that tend to be dismissed in the everyday. See if this pause causes you to return with a different perspective.


Life is (still) meant to be lived outdoors.Those delightful occasions of dining al fresco in the summer don’t have to go away anytime soon. In fact, they may even get a little bit more special. Autumn is an excellent season for foraging. Take time on your next walk to pick fresh fruits and vegetables and create an intimate outdoor supper complete with warm blankets, favourite sweaters, and perhaps the glow and warmth of a nearby fire. Let the slow evenings and natural conversations commence. Your friends will thank you.


Revel in some solitude. When autumn begins to inch towards us, travel tends to slow with families of school-aged children, meaning there are likely fewer people to be out on the walking trails. Dramatic landscapes and uninterrupted views are yours for the taking.



But words can only do so much. Let the familiar smell of damp leaves, salty coastal walks and cool air on your skin pull you out the front door. May these short, special days continue to linger as long as possible.


As Nathaniel Hawthorne said,


"...I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house. So I have spent almost all the daylight hours in the open air."
